Mastermind podcast Episode #37

"Museums should become more democratic and open, communities should be able to get involved in the curation of exhibitions." That's what Alina Fuchte, director of the project nextmuseum.io, says. Find out how she organizes the platform for co-creation of exhibitions and what we can learn from her in the new episode of the Vordenker Podcast!

Alina Fuchte studied art history and cultural and social anthropology in her bachelor's degree and cultural analysis and cultural mediation in her master's degree. Now she works at the Kunstforum NRW in Düsseldorf and leads there the project nextmuseum.io - a platform for co-creating exhibitions. The goal is to make museums more democratic and open; communities should be able to participate in the curation of exhibitions. To this end, the platform is running open calls, in which curators can launch calls and artists can submit their contributions. The community or, as Alina Fuchte says, "the swarm", can get involved, for example, by voting or commenting, or directly contribute ideas themselves.

In the podcast, Alina tells how she and her colleague Marina Bauernfeind from the Museum Ulm "got on the swarm" and how such a community process changes an exhibition. "We want the conversation and the behind-the-scenes look to happen before the exhibition," she says.

Her learning from the first two years or so of nextmuseum.io: "Community means commitment and time. Schwarmkuration also doesn't mean anarchy; the community itself doesn't want that either." Rather, good structures, support for the community and feedback mechanisms are needed.

Our conclusion: open projects in other industries can learn from this!

Look forward to the new episode, which can be listened to as usual on all common platforms and is of course also here available!
